Job Scope:

Reporting to the Manager, Economic Development and Communications, the Community Engagement Officer plays a vital role in supporting Economic Development and Communications initiatives including special events and community festivals, multi-platform marketing, bolstering external and internal communications, investment attraction, and supporting businesses and business growth within the Municipality.

DUTIES:

  • Supports the creation, implementation, and execution of special events and festivals in collaboration with relevant committees and community organizations
  • Supports the creation of various marketing materials including but not limited to: print collateral, media releases, social media, website, online engagement tools, surveys, newsletters, and email
  • Creates engaging content for various communication mediums for relevant campaigns
  • Supports municipal staff in all communications resources and media relations
  • Supports internal communications across the Municipality
  • Monitors media coverage and assists in the coordination of media events
  • Supports the maintenance of the Municipal website, updating the activities and events calendar
  • Assists in conducting community needs assessments to identify and better understand/support the community; provides community information for business inquiries
  • Acts as a resource to community members and provides links to resident groups, agencies, and broader municipal resources
  • Identifies opportunities to promote initiatives through public relations/outreach events
  • Engages resident participation in community initiatives
  • Supports the Mayor/Council on new initiatives and strategic priorities when needed
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of a diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, Business Marketing, or a related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ prior work experience in communications, public relations, community outreach or related field.  Previous municipal experience considered an asset
  • Proven experience drafting, editing, production and distribution engaging content for a range of communications materials
  • Thorough knowledge of computer operations, web content management systems, and social media platforms
  • Functional ability with video editing software and graphic design software
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills; ability to convey messages to diverse audiences
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to foster effective relationships with staff, Council, residents, and media
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and good judgement
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple priorities and rigid deadlines
  • Ability to work independently or as a team
  • Due to the nature of the position, must have the ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, as required
  • Valid Class G license and clear criminal background check required

HOURS OF WORK

  • 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (1 hour paid lunch)
  • Occasional evenings and weekends required

TOTAL COMPENSATION PACKAGE INCLUDES:

  • Pay rate: CUPE Grade 14 ($29.42– $35.90/hour) (Currently under review)
  • Generous benefits package covered 100% by the Municipality
  • Enrolment in OMERS pension plan
  • Vacation, overtime, flexible work schedule
