Website NORTHUMBERLAND FINE FOOD

Fresh Food Counter Specialist – Full Time

We’re looking for someone who wants to build a career in specialty food retail. This role is positioned at our fresh meat, cheese, and charcuterie counter — three distinct business areas that require both meticulous attention and genuine pride in your work. You’ll be running this area as if it’s a mini business: planning your day based on projected traffic, maintaining exceptional visual presentation, executing custom orders, and ensuring nothing ever looks neglected or second-rate. We need someone who doesn’t wait to be told what to do, who understands that slow periods are opportunities to get ahead, and who genuinely cares about the quality of what we put in front of customers. This role requires real commitment and independent thinking — if you’re energized by that kind of responsibility and autonomy, keep reading.

What you’ll be responsible for:

  • Managing daily operations of the fresh meat, cheese, and cured meat departments, with full ownership and accountability
  • Maintaining consistently beautiful product presentation — arrangement, cleanliness, and visual appeal that reflects our standards
  • Anticipating daily needs and stocking appropriately based on traffic patterns, season, and inventory
  • Serving customers with warmth and expertise, handling custom orders and inquiries with care
  • Following rigorous food safety, rotation, labelling, and storage procedures — not just because we require it, but because you understand why it matters
  • Keeping your work area meticulously organized in both visible and behind-the-scenes spaces
  • Using your judgment to prioritize tasks: knowing what’s urgent, what can wait, and what will prevent problems tomorrow
  • Working with urgency whether we’re busy or slow — hustling when it’s quiet is how we stay prepared when it’s not
  • Taking initiative to engage in productive work without being prompted or managed

What we’re looking for:

  • Someone who treats this role as a vocation, not a placeholder job
  • A strong, self-motivated work ethic and comfort working independently
  • A naturally outgoing, talkative nature. This counter is a stage: you’ll be greeting every customer, describing products, and guiding people who don’t know what they want yet. If that sounds draining rather than energizing, this isn’t the role for you
  • Organizational discipline and attention to detail in both preparation and presentation
  • A belief that “good enough” isn’t good enough — you hold yourself to a high standard because that’s who you are
  • No prior experience required, but a serious commitment to learning and growing in this role

Position details:

This is a full-time, Monday to Friday position. Shifts run from 9:45 AM to 6:15 PM, but we can consider an option for a 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM daily shift instead. Starting wage is $20/hour, with meaningful wage increases based on performance and development. If this sounds like the kind of work you want to do, we’d like to hear from you.
