Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean, the part-time Lab Assist will assist faculty with the delivery of courses within the above programming incorporating a variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies which are designed to successfully meet the needs of learners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of learning activities for students, under the direction of the professor in the Pre-Service Firefighter Lab environment.
  • Prepares and maintainslaboratoryclassroomand equipment for Pre-Service Fire program lab activities.
  • Ensure lab activities are set up and equipment is maintained and repaired for optimal use to support lab activities.Provides
  • demonstrations on proper equipment use and relevant procedures
  • Supports faculty directly in the lab setting.
  • Provides input into student achievement of learning outcomes and supports student progress through effective and timely communication with the professor.
  • Facilitates, supports learning by offering feedback, and alternate means of understanding. Supports evaluation through use of check lists and rubrics to guide learning.
  • Utilizes appropriate technological tools that support the learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current member of a fire department or recently retired from a fire department (generally within the past three years) either in a fulltime or volunteer fire fighter role
  • Must have the following National Fire Protection Association certification standards: NFPA 1010 – Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications – Fire Fighter 1 and 2 Certification, NFPA1041 – Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications – Instructor 1 Certification, NFPA 1072 – Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications
  • NFPA 1006 – Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications – Technical Rescue – Chapter 5 Core Operations would be considered an asset
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
  • Experience supporting learners in an adult learning environment. This experience may include vocational teaching as a company officer or a training officer in municipal fire services, teaching at a post-secondary institution, or other experiences deemed equivalent
  • Demonstrate evidence of competency in adult education principles and practices. This competency may be demonstrated through completion of recognized courses in adult education or documented equivalent educational or work experiences
  • Demonstrate high standing competency and currency in the subject matter to be taught. This competency may be demonstrated through formal education and documented experience
  • Excellent grounding in best practice and emerging knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field
  • A proven commitment to achieving and developing excellence in others
  • A commitment to lifelong learning in the field
  • A proven ability to work within a collaborative environment, demonstrating flexibility
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills
  • Advanced computer literacy and a demonstrated willingness to acquire and use learning tools (such as Loyalist’s Canvas Learning Management System) commensurate with departmental requirements
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and problem-solving, conflict and stress management skills
